Why Choose an Oral Surgeon
for Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Think of your general dentist as your primary dental care provider, similar to your family physician. We work closely with your general dentist to ensure a seamless transition and long-term health after this important surgical milestone. When specialized surgical care is needed, a referral to a specialist is the key to a predictable outcome.

Choosing a specialized oral surgeon ensures predictable outcomes and clinical excellence. Dr. Roderick VanSuksum combines decades of experience with advanced residency training to manage even the most complex extractions. His collaborative approach with general dentists ensures patients receive the highest standard of care from consultation through recovery.

Hospital-Level Safety in a Private Practice Setting

Safety is our highest priority. Facial Designs, P.A., is a Category 1 Anesthesia Facility that meets the highest hospital-level safety standards for outpatient surgery. We separate the roles of the surgeon and the anesthesia provider to ensure total focus on patient health. All surgeries are performed under monitored IV sedation provided by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or our on-site Licensed RN, who is ACLS- and DAANCE-certified.

A Stress-Free Experience

Our patients remain asleep, comfortable, and deeply relaxed throughout their procedure. This level of monitored sedation allows Dr. Roderick VanSurksum, Board-Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, to work efficiently and precisely while ensuring the patient experiences no awareness, discomfort, or stress during treatment.

Reduce Swelling and Discomfort
Patients often report a significantly more comfortable experience during the initial days of healing.

Accelerate Healing
PRF speeds up the regeneration of soft tissue and bone.

Lower Risk of Complications
This advanced technology significantly reduces the chances of dry sockets or postoperative infection.

Evaluation & Treatment

  • You’ll meet with Dr. VanSurksum for a full exam.

  • In‑office X‑rays (or those provided by your general dentist) help determine the size, position, and condition of your wisdom teeth.

  • Your oral surgeon will review treatment options and answer any questions you have.

2

Category 1 Anesthesia for Your Comfort

Your comfort is a priority, and several sedation options are available. Facial Designs is a Category 1 Anesthesia Facility, meaning we meet the highest standards for safety, monitoring, and sedation.

Options may include: Local anesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and IV sedation or general anesthesia. The choice depends on your needs, comfort level, and the complexity of your case.

Advanced Clinical Training
At Facial Designs, every IV anesthetic is administered by a Registered Nurse. This separation allows Dr. VanSurksum to focus entirely on the surgical procedure, especially during complex wisdom teeth removals, while your RN provides continuous, expert monitoring for maximum safety and comfort. This model is the opposite of what patients typically experience in an oral surgery office, where the surgeon often manages both roles at once.

Our anesthesia team is supported by:

  • DAANCE‑certified Licensed Dental Assistants, trained in advanced anesthesia assisting and emergency readiness

  • An ACLS‑certified Registered Nurse, ensuring elevated airway and cardiac support

  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) is used for more complex wisdom teeth removals for added safety and comfort

  • A fully CPR‑certified clinical and administrative team

This collaborative approach reflects the standards of a Category 1 anesthesia facility and ensures that every patient receives the safest, most comfortable surgical experience possible.

The Extraction Procedure

Wisdom teeth removal happens in one of two ways:
If the Tooth Has Erupted

  • The procedure is straightforward.

  • Your oral surgeon uses specialized instruments to gently remove the tooth.

  • No incisions are needed, but expertise is essential for a safe, predictable extraction.

If the Tooth Is Impacted
  • A small incision is made in the gum to access the tooth.

  • If necessary, the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal.

  • Sutures are placed to close the incision and support healing.

4

Recovery & Aftercare

  • You’ll receive detailed post‑operative instructions before leaving the office.

  • Following these guidelines closely helps ensure a smooth, comfortable recovery.

  • If anything feels unusual or concerning, our team is here to help.

FAQ

Not always, some wisdom teeth grow in normally and never cause problems. However, many become impacted or create future risks, so removal is often recommended before issues develop.

Most patients benefit from removal between ages 15–25, when the roots are not fully formed, and healing is fastest. Earlier evaluation helps determine the ideal timing for each individual.

Most patients feel significantly better within 3–5 days, with full wisdom teeth healing taking a couple of weeks. Following your post‑operative instructions closely helps ensure a smooth, comfortable recovery.

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that cannot fully erupt because it’s trapped beneath the gums or angled incorrectly. This can lead to pain, infection, cysts, or damage to nearby teeth if left untreated.

Yes, some patients choose local anesthesia only, but most prefer IV sedation for a completely relaxed, comfortable experience.

Costs vary based on the number of teeth, complexity, and type of anesthesia used. We provide a personalized estimate at your consultation and help you understand insurance coverage and payment options.
